Abstract
This study aimed to identify latent profiles of community¡¯s distribution of immigrants and to test the effects of latent profile membership on adolescents¡¯ multicultural acceptability. The community-level sample consisted of 299 si¡¯s, gun¡¯s and gu¡¯s and the individual level sample consisted of 1,927 adolescents (aged 14) from the Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS). The main findings were as follows. First, our analysis of community¡¯s distribution of immigrants identified four latent profiles: international student concentrated, former inhabitant concentrated, foreigner¡¯s child concentrated, foreign workers and overseas Korean concentrated. Second, the results of multiple regression analyses revealed that adolescents who were living in the international student concentrated area were more likely to have higher multicultural acceptability, and the adolescents who were living in the foreign workers and overseas Korean concentrated area were more likely to have lower multicultural acceptability compared to adolescents who were living in the former inhabitant concentrated area. This study attempted to explain adolescents¡¯ multicultural acceptability at the community level, not at the individual level. Our empirical findings suggest that local governments should devise policies to enhance multicultural acceptability considering the communities¡¯ characteristics of the distribution of immigrants.
